Playing Opposum

When we lived in California we decided to move to Lake Forest. It was near the Laguna coast where the ocean breeze kept the air free from smog.
We found a very nice house with a pool for the kids.
We settled in, got acquainted with our neighbors and began to enjoy our selves. I stayed pretty busy with the grandbabies and had fun taking them into the pool. The only problem I had was with our pomeranian, Shadow. She thought the pool was put there for her benefit. I made sure she knew where the steps were as soon as we moved in so occasionally I'd hear a splash then see her little black head bobbing up and down in the pool. She'd get out, pass through the doggie door into the bathroom, shake herself off on the rug then come looking for me. When she'd see us with our suits on she'd get very excited. She thought we were put on this earth to serve her so naturally our job was to entertain her in the pool and out!
We'd planned to bar-b-que one day, so all the kids came over and naturally brought their suits. We spent a wonderful day swimming, eating, and just lazing around the pool. We had some floats for the girls and they lost no time breaking them in! One of the boys put Shadow on a float and that was his big mistake. He'd push the float around in the water with her standing on it then every time he'd stop, she'd bark, and bark, and bark!
We finally called it a day. Everyone had gone home and I curled up on the couch to watch some t.v. Lou was laying in his recliner snoring and wheezing.
Suddenly I heard a splash in the pool and Shadow began barking. I just assumed she'd gone back in for another swim but she just kept barking and I realized something was upsetting her so I threw my shoe over on Lou and woke him up.
I was exhausted from cooking and chasing babies all day so he was glad to go check on her for me. I heard the sliding door open then I heard him holler for me. I jumped up and took off running (did I mention he can't swim?)
I found him and Shadow moving from one end of the pool to the other, and pointing to the middle of the pool. I squinted my eyes and looked and there swimming around in circles was a baby opposum!
We had a pool net on a long pole and I suggested that Lou get it and scoop the little fellow out. He got the net and began to scoop him up. The poor little scared opposum took advantage of the pole and began to crawl slowly toward Lou. Lou's eyes got big and he began to shake the pole until he'd shook the little opposum back off into the pool! By now I was laughing at him. Imagine! Being afraid of a baby opposum! I think I hurt his pride because he dunked the net back under the opposum. As usual, it began to crawl slowly up the pole toward Lou. Oh what I'd give for a camera! This was past funny! It was hysterical!
Suddenly Lou swung the pole over his head and behind him. I saw the little opposum go flying through the air towards the neighbors house behind us! Lou looked at me smugly."There! I got it out!" he said proudly. I told him if he were smart this is one story he shouldn't share with the guy's at work!
